The Wooden Spoon 2010
The Junior team triumph in the very first Wooden
Spoon competition!
Three teams (Men, Ladies and Juniors) met in a head-to-head
(to-head!) challenge in the 2010 Wooden Spoon competition.
The ladies very kindly let the 'boys' go head to head (OK,
didn't play that well on the day!) and the Juniors triumphed
over the Men beating them by fraction to win the trophy.
Well done the Juniors!!!!

22 ladies set off down the A3 to Old Thorns at Liphook on Sunday 28 June 2009 for an overnight stay. It is a very challenging course, with greens of glass and tree-lined fairways, but a ‘cracking time’ was had by all, which brings the following tale to mind:
Picture this. A four-ball on the tee (Sue Grant, Val Banks, Liz Lei and Keiko Holt), it's the 16th and the nominated Nearest the Pin hole. The tension is mounting, they have discussed club selection, tested the wind, checked out the hazards and they are ready to go.Val steps up to the tee area, puts down her tee peg and ball and lines herself up. They wait, holding breath in anticipation, she wriggles her bum, wriggles her club a bit and they still wait (remember this is Val playing!), finally she takes her back swing and they are all encouraging the ball onto the green, near the hole when...........over the trees on the right it flies and SMASH they hear a glass window shatter.....they are all standing in stunned silence broken only by Val crying 'it wasn't me'! They race to the green, putt out quickly and get the hell out of there before they get into trouble. Well done Val, is that a hole in one......?!!
Later that evening it also emerged that Liz Lei had overshot the 9th Green and landed her ball in the restaurant – we never found the ball.....we think the chef has quite a selection by now!
Many of the Tees and Greens were elevated and the fairways were lined with either, trees, bushes or water. A satellite view of the course that weekend would have made a wonderful video of ladies with buggies running like ants back and forth over the course. The sales of balls must have increased considerably over the two days!
A most enjoyable meal and a few drinks were consumed on the Saturday evening and the evening was completed with a super picture quiz, put together by John Adams.
Monday was equally eventful, and fun was had by all and the day finished off with the presentation of some lovely prizes.
On day one the team winners were Sue Grant & Liz Lei and the runners up Jean Bruton & Aline Wooton. Nearest the Pin Linda Watts. Of course, Val got a ‘smashing’ prize for her ‘hole in one’..........
.
Day 2 the individual winner was Jean Burton and the runner up Ann Bruce. Nearest the Pin was Jean Michie and Secret Pairs Jean Burton & Susan Norgan.
100 Hole Challenge

On Thursday, 25th June Liz Lei, John Adams, Steve Knight and Des Smyth all arrived at the golf club at 5.15 in the morning (yes, you read that correctly!) armed with cool boxes full of cold drinks in anticipation of a hot and long day! Fuelled by enthusiasm and confidence, they commenced the mammoth task of completing 100 holes of golf in one day to raise money for the Captains Charities.
With the support of various members throughout the day (buggy driving and general cheerleading duties) Liz, John, Steve and Des managed to complete their marathon 100 holes in superb time, without injury apart from the odd blister or two!
The challenge was increased as the temperature soared and it turned out to be one of the hottest days this year! However, some great golf was played along the way, as you will see from the scores.
Liz Lei - 553
John Adams – 391
Steve Knight - 460
Des Smyth – 452
Whilst Liz, John, Steve and Des are the true stars on the day, they would like to express their sincere thanks to all that sponsored them and those members that supported them with this task on the day. Also, big thanks to Crown Golf, Sunbury for donating two buggies for the day and for their continued support for what has now become a regular event and key fundraiser for the Captains Charities.
It was a true team effort by all and raised a figure in the region of *£800.00 towards our Captains Charities this year! Well done all of you!
If you have the time - here's Liz's blog entry for the day.

YORK CLUB – WINDSOR GREAT PARK
Return to top of page
16th May 2009br> TThe ladies were invited to play a friendly match by the York Club on 16th May 2009. The course only has 6 holes and is in Windsor Great Park. However, there are two tee boxes for each hole and you see the beautiful scenery three times. The course was in a better condition than in the past years we have played there. However, there are rather lot of trees, a lot of long grass and one or two mole hills to say the least. Prince Philip will not allow the grass to be cut until all the wild flowers have died down and he allows the moles and rabbits to live freely on the course, so the ball either hides in the long grass, disappears into a rabbit run or sits nicely on a pile of mud. There is no room for wayward shots as the trees claim the ball and throw it back at you in all directions. Only a small course, but very interesting and challenging.
The York ladies were very hospitable and provided a wonderful afternoon tea. Copious amounts of tea are poured and lovely sandwiches and cakes are devoured. The Sunbury ladies, of course, gained a few inches around their waists.
I believe that is about 9 years since Roz Frankland arranged our first match with the York Club and the ladies always enjoy it. However, I have to report that sadly we lost 3 and won a half.

English Golf Union - Active/Inactive Handicaps
Return to top of page
Players will be required to have submitted 3 qualifying scores (including Supplementary Scores & 9 Hole Qualifying Competitions and Away scores) during the calendar year 2009 (not the period between annual handicap reviews) to avoid having an inactive handicap for the playing season, 2010. NR’s will not be accepted as part of the 3 qualifying scores.
Clubs will be permitted to exempt players from an inactive () handicap for injury/illness that has prevented them from achieving the required number of qualifying scores during a calendar year. This will also include those playerswho are transferring membership who have submitted scores albeit at another Club and to golfers new to the game who are being issued with first CONGU handicap.
Players whose handicap has become inactive will be required to return three qualifying scores before the indicator is removed. Qualifying scores of less than 3 are not permitted to be carried over to the next year, i.e. no topping up of qualifying scores permitted, e.g. 1 score in the previous year and 2 in current year.
Clubs may impose an entry condition that requires an active handicap (3 previously submitted qualifying scores) for specific competitions only such as Trophy or Board events. In all other cases Clubs must allow "home" players with inactive handicaps entry to qualifying competitions in order to provide as much opportunity as possible for the removal of the inactive handicap.
An inactive handicap can still be used for social golf and those competitions for which an active handicap is not an entry condition. Scores from players with inactive handicaps will be used in the calculation of a CSS.
The requirement of 3 qualifying scores will be reviewed by EGU/EWGA during 2010 to consider if this should be increased for the following year.
The active/inactive identification of handicaps will be required as from the beginning of 2010.
Inactive handicaps will followed by an
